DESCRIPTION

Papirosen (also: papirosn), “cigarettes” in Yiddish, is the title of a song that was popular on Polish and Russian lands during World War II. It is sung in the first scene by Pola, a doyenne of a four-generation family of the director, who despite having spent many years in Buenos Aires tries to preserve his Jewish heritage. However, Solnicki does not point his camera only at the past. In this exceptional chronicle made in more than a decade, their stormy history—the trauma of escaping the Holocaust and starting a new life in Argentina—intertwine with everyday life of the Sokolnicki family.
