DESCRIPTION

The winner of numerous awards, an epic melodrama starring the great Catherine Deneuve as the protagonist. The actress plays a charismatic Eliane, a wealthy plantation owner, an heiress to colonizers. Her foster Vietnamese daughter falls in love with a French officer, who feels the same about her. The portrayal of their forbidden love is also used to convey a nostalgic image of Eliane’s world and its turbulent collapse: from increasing resistance against the colonizers, through the outbreak of World War II, to an eight years’ armed uprising, which lead to Vietnam gaining its independence in 1955.
