In a classroom in Sicily, just inside the walls of Fortress Europe, recently arrived migrants receive lessons from a teacher who has some rather unbalanced traits. One moment he mercilessly rejects the refugees – the next, mollifyingly, he embraces them. Operating at the intersection of documentary and fiction, “Stranger in Paradise” investigates the power relations between Europe and refugees. Divided Europe is represented by an actor (the antagonist) who reveals himself in various different guises to his class of refugees (the protagonists). “Stranger in Paradise” seeks to hold up a mirror to Europeans by confronting migrants with the debate of which they are the object. It makes clear how rules and procedures, purged of emotion, provide a handle and create distance when the other is at the door. At the same time, the question arises: can we not say the same thing about all ideologies?
