In 1990, seven young dancers—Kevin, Oliver, Luis, Carlton, Jose, Gabriel and Salim—set off with Madonna on the Blond Ambition Tour, the most controversial concert tour in her career. Six of them were gay. For these boys in their early twenties, it was a journey of a lifetime, depicted in the documentary In Bed with Madonna by Alek Keshishian in 1991. Madonna used this film to fight for rights of homosexuals, promote freedom of speech, and combat AIDS. These dancers soon became icons of sexual freedom, inspiring people all around the world to reveal their real sexual orientation. Strike a Pose, directed 25 years later, shows what it meant to admit one’s true self, and what consequences it entailed. Apart from being an interesting treat for Madonna’s fans, it is also a portrait of cultural changes of that time.
