DESCRIPTION

In August 2015, the court of Rostov-on-Don sentenced Oleg Sentsov, a Ukranian director and EuroMaidan activist, to 20 years of imprisonment. Sentsov vigorously objected to the annexation of Crimea by Russia in March 2014. Soon after that he was arrested by the Russian forces and charged with terrorism offences. The case was built around evidence from coerced statements of two witnesses, which were later withdrawn in court. The Trial: The State of Russia vs. Oleg Sentsov shows the efforts of the director’s family and friends and the international filmmaking community to have Sentsov released as well as the progress of the trial itself, which reveals the Kafkaesque absurdity of the clash between an individual and a ruthless state machine.
