DESCRIPTION
Fictional protestant village Eichwald in Germany just before the outbreak of WWI. Three men—a vicar, a baron, and a doctor—exercise unofficial authority over the village, imposing and enforcing sacred traditional rules. The vicar raises his children in an autocratic way, the baron exploits his workers, and the doctor humiliates his maid and abuses sexually his daughter. A series of perplexing incidents occur in Eichwald which bring to light the violence that regulates the life of local community. The film is exceptional for the black-and-white pictures, and is often interpreted as an epic essay revealing the ideological roots of Nazism.
